Institutional Description
The Departments of Economics at Aalto University and the University of Helsinki form the core of the Helsinki Graduate School of Economics (Helsinki GSE), a joint initiative also including Hanken School of Economics. Together, they offer strong research and doctoral training environments, with particular strengths in labor and education economics, applied econometrics, and public policy evaluation. The academic community is further enriched by close collaboration with strong economics research institutes ETLA Economic Research, VATT Institute for Economic Research, and the Labour Institute for Economic Research (LABORE). Together, these institutions form a strong concentration of expertise in applied empirical microeconomics, bringing together both senior researchers and a large number of active PhD students.
Helsinki economics community regularly hosts prestigious international conferences and workshops. The recent meetings include the European Meeting of the Economic Science Association and the Trans-Atlantic Public Economics Workshop in 2024 and the Helsinki Economics of Crime Workshop in 2023.
